The 4 Worst Ways to Start a New Job

The 4 Worst Ways to Start a New Job The 4 Worst Ways to Start a New Job Many companies have nurturing onboarding programs that help you transition into the organization, but these programsare not perfect. As a new hire, it is up to you todeploy great new-job behaviors and avoid terrible ones if you are to ensure your success.Manyhave covered the great new-job behaviors I mention above, so I thought I would take the opportunity to explore the terrible new-job behaviors. Think of this postasa massive red warning side on a road that screams Cliff drop aheadThat is to say these are the four worst ways to abflug a job, and you should avoid every single one.1. Starting With a Poor Attitude and/or Lack of MotivationThe single worst way to start a job is to start with anything other than a bounce in your stepand a resilient, can-do attitude. The Leadership IQ study to which I linked in the first paragraph foundthatmost new hires fail thanks to poor attitudes and/or a lack of motivation no t because they lack technical skills. On your first day along with the obvious requirement of not arriving late you should also avoid complaining about mundane things like parking, traffic, or your own lack of focus. Make sure you are outwardly positive and accommodating, and offer plenty of suggestions whenappropriate. If there is a problem that needs a remedy, fix it if you canstudies showthat new hires who achieve quick wins perform better later on in their careers and are more promotable.2. Neglecting Your BossStudies showthat one of the most influential factors in determining whether an employee quits a job is the employees relationship with their boss. Employee-boss relationships are also linked to satisfaction and productivity.Ensure you meet with your boss early on and quickly try toestablish common ground in terms of personality, values, ideals, social interests, etc. Doing so will help you build a strong rapport with your boss, which bodes well for your tenure at the job. 3. Failing to Manage Your Own Onboarding and OrientationPerhaps you are thinking, Isnt myemployer supposed totake care of that? Well, they very well might notan Aberdeen Group studyfound that only 32 percent of employers have formal onboarding processes.Chances are youll be left to fend for yourselfwhen it comes to joining the company, building your network, and learning the ropes. Waiting around to be told what to do may be one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a new hire. If your manager is slow on assigning goals, chase them down or write your own until your sanctioned goals arrive. If you have a gap in your knowledge, find out who knows the answer and ask them to teach it to you.4. Spending All Day at Your DeskWorking on your first day is crucial, but this study from the Sloan School of Managementfound that new hires who quickly build information relationships with colleagues also get up tospeed more quickly, perform better, and are more satisfied with their jobs. You can d o some networking on your computer, but face-to-face networking will help you build the strongest relationships. Dont do it blindly or stickto yourcomfort zone build a political map of influencers at the company, then get out and meet them

Do as I say, not as I did

Do as I say, not as I didDo as I say, not as I didSelf-styled reformed prestige whore David Lat gave a pep talk the other day to students at the University of Virginia Law School. (The brief video clip is worth checking out follow this link and then click the video icon on the right.)SamplesIn a democracy, voters get the government they deserve in an Information Age, students and young lawyers get the legal profession they deserve. When you are on the treadmill, you are so focused on what is ahead of you that you cant see that youre ridiculous.Essentially, Lat advised the aspiringBigLawassociates tolook beyond the rankings, both in law and in life. How to Get Through Work When The Worlds a Mess - The Muse

How to Get Through Work When The Worlds a Mess - The MuseHow to Get Through Work When The Worlds a Mess The sniper attack in Dallas, the death of an innocent man in MN, the suicide bombings in Turkey, the mass shooting in Orlando- I could go on, but you probably dont need me to remind you of all the terrible things going on in the world. This isnt an article about whats right or wrong, its not about airport security, guns, or gun laws and it certainly isnt about politics or which politician is tweeting what. Its about you. When the weight of what youve seen and heard threatens to tear your heart in two, how can you possibly muster the enthusiasm for your 10 AM meeting or be expected to wrap your head around finishing that report by the end of the day?Doesnt it seem silly to dive right into the minutia of your daily work following such a major tragedy? Those hundred tiny things on your to-do list suddenly seem a whole lot tinier when the shadow of something horrible looms large. But you cant just stop working. Youre not going to quit your job or abandon the career youve been building. So what do you do?Here are three thoughts to help you cope.1. Love Your ResponsibilitiesGuns. Crime. War. Disease. Terror. Drought. Refugees. And on, and on, and on.There are a lot of soul-stirring things happening out there. Theyre happening right now, they happened yesterday, and theyre probably going to happen tomorrow, too. Focusing on your day-to-day responsibilities when theres major loss and sadness around you is challenging. You may feel like you got bumped out of your groove. All you can see is a larger landscape, and with that point of view, its easy to feel like what youre doing doesnt really matter, or that if you do knuckle down and start ticking things off your to-do list, then youre somehow missing the point or doing people who are suffering a disservice. But having a job and a set of responsibilities isnt incompatible with being a caring menschenfreundlich being. You have a 5 PM meeting to attend? Excellent. Love the fact that you get to turn up and do great work. Just been asked to take on a new project? Awesome. Now dive into it and relish the opportunity. Forced to hand-hold a colleague through a shared assignment? Perfect. How wonderful that you get to help someone and have an impact on their work.Feeling, caring, and remembering dont require that you stop everything else, and choosing to embrace and love your responsibilities rather than disconnect from them can be transformative.2. Feed the AngelsFear, pain, and anger are like locomotives barreling through you. Imposing and banging and crashing, these powerful emotions divert your attention away from the task at hand.Applying yourself at work when theres a steam train rolling through your head and over your heart isnt easy, and buckling down so you can finish the deck probably seems downright trivial. Soon, youre struggling to keep an even, calm demeanor.Maybe you snap at a co-worker who asks you a question you deem dumb. Maybe you think Fine, Ill do it myself, when something isnt completed as you expected. And maybe you roll your eyes and rail against the small talk you hear in the cubicles and corridors. But you dont have to feed those things. You dont have to stoke the furnace that drives bitterness, or misunderstanding, or judgment. What if, instead, you were at your best as a response to a terrible event?Think generosity with time or spirit over armor-donning. Empathy over division. Compassion over judgment. Your best experiences at work have been the times when you were at your best, and dont think for a moment that choosing to be this way now is an inappropriate response to something horrible.Feed the angels, not the demons.3. BreatheWhen all is said and done, you still have a job to do. I know, I know, moving numbers around in a spreadsheet or running a meeting about marketing strategy seems kind of ridiculous when compared with whats out there. But its something. And having something solid to focus on in a world that seems to be shifting can help provide the balance that you so desperately seek. So, breathe...Take a breath, and realize how lucky you are to be employed, to be alive and well, sitting in an office, getting paid to do work you care about (or at least, hopefully, dont loathe). In the best case scenario, youre surrounded by people who are good, decent human beings, and in the worst, youve got a work bff or a person to grab a cup of afternoon tea with. Take a look around, breath deeply, and consider how fortunate you are. Some days youll still struggle to care a lot about the work in front of you when theres so much else to think about. You may even (temporarily) view your job as insignificant based on whats happening in the world, and thats OK, too. Letting yourself feel things and process is a part of getting back on track. Remember this Youre allowed to slow down until youre ready to do more. And that doing your job isnt incompat ible with being a caring person whos worried about whats happening in the world. Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The Muse

Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The MuseParenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True Alright, so maybe eating a bunch of carrots didnt keep you from needing glasses, and no, you never actually went blind from sitting too close to the TV. But, that doesnt mean that all of the advice your parents gave you is completely bogus. In fact, your folks probably dished out their fair share of clichs and proverbs that are actually pretty applicable to your career and professional life now. Of course, you probably rolled your eyes and sighed dramatically at the time and were all, You dont get it, you still call Twitter, Tweeter. But, its never too late to put that advice to work. Here are five sentiments from dear old Mom and Dad that are more applicable than you ever believed they would be. And dont worry- you dont need to tell them that they were right. 1. You Catch More Flies With HoneyPreaching kindness must be on the first page of the parent handboo k, as theyre always quick to remind you that thoughtfulness is the way to go. Obviously, there are occasions when you need to be a bit more himmelskrper and direct in the workplace- like when your intern comes in late for the umpteenth time. But, in general, you cant go wrong with being polite. Its human nature, really. When people are kind to us, we feel inclined to be kind to them. Plus, being more friendly and upbeat in your office not only impresses your team and does wonders when it comes to fostering better work relationships, but its also likely to improve your attitude toward your daily work. So, bring in bagels and donuts every now and then, compliment your co-worker on a job well done, or perform a completely random act of kindness. Youll be surprised how much your entire work environment- and mindplatzdeckchen- will change by just being nicer.2. Never Burn Your BridgesWe all know the far too catchy Disney song, Its a Small World After All. Annoying as it may be- and I do apologize that its now stuck in your head- the sentiment definitely holds water. Lets face it the business world is actually pretty darn small- especially if youre in a more niche industry. So, you always need to be mindful of maintaining positive relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and peers. Keeping this advice in mind is especially critical when resigning from a position (yes, even if its one you hated). Its important to turn in your notice in a way thats respectful and professional, regardless of how much you want to throw both middle fingers in your anfhrer face. After all, you never quite know who your boss is connected with, which former co-workers youll encounter in the future, or wholl get called for a back-channel reference.3. Its Not Always About What You Know, But WhoOh, the undeniable power of connections. Does this scenario sound familiar? Youre being considered for a job you know youd be amazing at, and youre confident you completely nailed the interview. A fe w days later, you receive the dreaded thanks, but no thanks email, letting you know that the companys moved forward with a different candidate- and then, just when youre moving on from the rejection, you discover the boss neighbors cousins daughter landed your dream job.Chances are, that rude awakening was soon followed by this little pep talk from one of your parents. Unfortunately, its true. The most qualified person isnt always the one who gets the job.So, how can you apply this to your professional life today? Continue building your network- work on it every single week. Join industry associations and attend local networking events. Set up informational interviews with companies you love and people you admire. Putting yourself out there can be scary (and even feel unnecessary when you like your current position), but assembling a powerful set of contacts will give you a leg up on the competition when you need it. 4. Rome Wasnt Built in a DayWe all know that your first job likely isnt going to be your dream job. (Or even your first few.) No, it takes your fair share of grunt work before you even get close to where you want to be in your career. But, theres nothing wrong with working your way up the ladder. It can be frustrating to feel like youre going nowhere in your position and youre not directly contributing to the bottom line- especially when you know youre capable of doing much more important work. But, as your parents loved to remind you, progress takes time. Its not an overnight transformation. Plus, theres an upside Youre immediately likable if youre the one who brings the coffee. At the very least, youve got that going for you.5. Actions Speak Louder Than WordsNot only was this bewertung likely printed on a poster hanging in your kindergarten classroom, but you probably heard it plenty from your parents, too. Well, Mom and Dad were right- again. Saying something and actually doing it are two completely different things. Anybody can state on his or her resume or in the interview that he or shes a skilled team builder or a Photoshop expert. But, the proof is in the pudding, and youre going to need to be able to put your money where your mouth is. (Like that? I squeezed two bonus parentisms in here for you)The same applies to office relationships and conflicts. Its easy to apologize to your boss or a co-worker for a mistake you made. If you continue to repeatedly make that mistake again and again? Now youve got problems. Follow up everything you say at work with a real, live corresponding action. Dont have time? Then dont tell someone otherwise- its as simple as that. Sure, your parents probably didnt actually trudge three miles to school, uphill both ways, barefoot in a snowstorm. But, once you move past the exaggerated stories and eyeroll-worthy parentisms, youll likely see that they actually know what theyre talking about. After all, you might as well take the advice from someone whos been through it all before.Photo of fathe r and son courtesy of Shutterstock.

Employee Incentives and Rewards Why Theyre Essential for Maximum Production - Spark Hire

Employee Incentives and Rewards Why Theyre Essential for Maximum Production - Spark HireEmployers, supervisors and managers- you have GOT to incorporate incentives and rewards into your production goals planning OK, so be honest. Did you just cry out yes or did you cringe? Your guess is as good as mine as to why the inclusion of employee incentives rewards is nott an expectation of management by now. Whether its ignorance or just plain laziness, there really is no excuse for managers not to craft some kind of motivational structure to your goal planning. Failing to do so doesnt help you or your employees. To explain, I will refrain from loading this post with statistics like the ones that have already been ignored by our potential cringers in the crowd. Instead, let me offer some personal testament. The president of the company I work for understands what a vital component of a healthy workplace culture employee incentives and rewards are. Let me tell you just a few of the small and simple, yet powerful, ways she implements incentives and rewards and how Ive personally witnessed their effects1. Recognize LongevityOn each anniversary- she recognizes annually- congratulate and thank employees for their commitment and contributions to the organization. Not a real people-person? A simple card left on a desk would do the trick. My president also gives a gift of $10 per year on the anniversary. Also, the anniversary date is shown on the company intranet so that other executives and coworkers can recognize too. For my coworkers and I, our anniversary date is like a professional Christmas morning. What will be on your desk when you come in on your anniversary? She always leaves a card and sometimes a small candy bar or other small treat2. Allow Employees to Let Their Hair Down- SometimesHosting a jeans or casual day is a really easy and completely cheap way to communicate to your employees that you are a real person who appreciates an occasional, comfortable day at the office. Pair earning casual days with a goal as a great incentive- itll be one that employees quite literally can feel the reward of. We have jean Fridays- mostly throughout the summer- when business gets the busiest for us. She generally sets a specific time-frame (four weeks, maybe) but if we do well, she often extends it noting, because you all have been working so hardjean days are extended for X number of weeks.3. Spoil Them, Modestly Is there a snack or treat that youre known for making for your family? Are you famous for a silly impression of someone or something? Would the office enjoy a game of some kind? When they do well, or when they need a pick-me-up, share some love. My president is famous for cakes. We get cake for every occasion, and sometimes just as a surprise. She doesnt make it herself, but its always something different and tastes delicious, and in the middle of an otherwise hectic or slow afternoon it helps us get back on track. We all know that nobody ever dre ams of a job just punching in and out without so much as a smile or a pat on the back throughout the years, so dont let that happen under your watch. If you need inspiration, consider the worlds best boss of NBCs hit show The Office, Michael Scott. The show depicts Michaels annual Dundies awards as an occasionally offensive, yet effective reward system The point is that your employees connect positive rewards with you, and their company.IMAGE Courtesy of Guy.com

The Benefits of Providing a Financial Education for Employees

The Benefits of Providing a Financial Education for EmployeesThe Benefits of Providing a Financial Education for EmployeesThe Benefits of Providing a Financial Education for Employees DeZubeFinancial education can be a significant benefit for employees. But did you know it also benefits employers?Employees who are better at managing their finances are less likely to end up with financial woes. That may also mean fewer requests for salary advances or hardship withdrawals from company 401(k)s.Financial stress can impact your workforce in negative ways by reducingworker productivityand increasing absenteeism. In fact, financial angst is more common than you might realize. More than half (52 percent) of respondents from PricewaterhouseCoopers 2016 Employee Financial Wellness Survey said theyre stressed about their overall finances 28 percent said their financial problems were a distraction at work.Financial education for employees can be a budget friendly investment with easy setup and la sting value.Large Company BenefitsMany large companies recognize the benefits of offering workers some financial education.Communications conglomerate Cox Enterprises provides employees with free access to one-on-one phone consultations with money coaches. These conversations cover topics such as debt counseling, retirement planning, budgeting and student loans, says Senior Manager of Public Relations Elizabeth Olmstead. A Know Your Numbers initiative provides a personal retirement readiness statement to eligible Cox employees to help them stay on track with saving for a comfortable retirement. These programs have had positive results and led to higher employee participation rates in retirement savings plans. Management cares about these programs and helps drive them as educational tools for employees to understand and utilize their benefits, says Olmstead.Organize Initiatives EconomicallyThe good nachrichtensendung is that offering financial education and advice neednt cost a lot of money or take a lot of time. Even informal sessions can have profound influences.Nest DC, a boutique property management company in Washington, D.C., schedules a brown bag lunch-and-learn about personal finances for employees. The sessions had a huge turnout and ran three times as long as expected. The meeting showed the company how eager employees were to learn about finances, says Managing Director Veronica Vivas.Nest DC ended up buying access to an online finance program, then offered employees a chance to win a $1,000 drawing in exchange for watching the programs videos and completing short quizzes. It was low cost $10 per person per month, including the budgeting tool, Vivas said. The focus on finances led more people to sign up for the companys SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees Individual Retirement Account.) Financial education also helped boost employee morale and cross-team relationships. A group of employees were inspired to save money by cooking lunc h together in the company kitchen instead of going out to lunch.Tap Service ProvidersCompanies that supply benefits to your organization can be a resource for financial education. MassMutual, for example, conducts free, on-site financial workshops called PlanSmart for its clients employees. The great thing about our program is its a turnkey solution employers can plug into, says Allison Mislow, dezentral PlanSmart director for Barnum Financial Group, Shelton, Connecticut. While the four week, face-to-face program is typically offered only to employers with 500 or more employees, Barnum makes an exception for firms with higher on-site headcounts, such as law or engineering firms. Each week the presenter talks about a financial topic and gives employees homework that applies the lessons to their own financial lives. At the end of the four weeks, employees have a greater understanding of where they stand with investments and how well theyre saving for retirement. The program incites empl oyees to take action, too, with 58% of participants increasing their contribution to 401(k) within three months.Your benefits provider may offer similar programs. Outsourced HR management firm strategic HR inc., Cincinnati, recently asked its retirement plan administrator to send someone in to speak to the companys 15 employees about retirement benefits and general finances. It was a huge hit and demonstrated a need for further training, says President Robin Throckmorton.Explore Smaller OptionsSmall organizations can usually find a local Certified Financial Planner willing to provide financial education, says Aaron Kahn, an independent, fee-only CFP with Wealth Management Strategies, Inc., Pittsburgh. While he does charge a fee to do roundtable discussions with employees, Kahn says the fee provides unbiased advice from someone whos more of a sounding board than a sales person.I was doing a round table a few weeks ago with a group of mostly Millennials. They were well paid but had stu dent loans and they couldnt decide whether it was worth sticking with their current loan balance, consolidating their loans or dumping all their extra income into their loans, says Kahn. Someone from an investment firm might tell the employees to put extra income into investments, while a life insurance company adviser would likely suggest buying a life policy he says. A neutral adviser will discuss pros and cons of each option and how to calculate the best return.Whether you choose to use a financial adviser or a reputable program, implementing financial education for employees has clear benefits forboth organizations and workers alike.

Questions to Ask During a Media Job Interview

Questions to Ask During a Media Job InterviewQuestions to Ask During a Media Job InterviewThe joy you had when you landed a media job interview has probably been replaced by worrying about what you may be asked when youre in the hot seat. Think about what you want to find out about the job during the interview. The answers you get from a potential anfhrer will give you insight into whether the job is right for you and help you avoid being the victim of a bad job interview. Prepare yourself with these 8 questions to ask during your media job interview. What is Your Management Background? A simple question gets the conversation going. You want to know whether you and your potential boss have a common past. If youve held the same types of jobs, lived in the same states or have some other connection, mention it. It sets you apart from the others who are interviewed and lets you find out whether you share links like that you used to live in Los Angeles, and thats where he went to col lege. In media, these answers also tell you whether his hintergrund is creative, financial or managerial. If youre a creative writer, you may want someone else with creative skills as a boss, rather than someone whose focus is on following the company policy guide. Whats Your Perfect Day Like as a Media Manager? This question gets you into the heart of the person who may lead you. Youve moved beyond the facts of his background to his hopes and dreams. An answer like, A perfect day would be on the golf course, with the office running itself, maybe just a light-hearted response, but it could signal that the boss is less hands-on. That might allow you to have more control over your day, without someone breathing down your neck. In contrast, a response like, Wed have a world exclusive on our magazine cover and sell out all our advertising space, shows the boss is competitive with specific goals. You can decide if you thrive best with a highly-driven leader in news management. Wha t Are the Management Challenges You Face? Asking this will show you the frustrations in this workplace. If you hear, Theres never enough money to cover stories the way I want, shows this manager may have financial battles and might even be bitter about it. Every time I get new hires trained, they leave, might indicate there are personnel issues or that its not a happy work environment. On the positive side, it could simply be a case of new hires being incredibly ambitious and getting better jobs elsewhere. Every media manager faces obstacles of some kind, includingratings pressureandkeeping employees happy. Dont let the responses immediately scare you from accepting the job. Where Do You See Yourself in Five or Ten Years? You need to know if your potential boss plans on sticking around. If he hits the road six months later, youre left proving yourself again to a new boss, without having time to create a track record of achievement. Theres nothing wrong with a manager who has pe rsonal ambition. You can end up following him up the corporate ladder or replacing him when he moves on. But its important to know if he has his eyes on the exit door as hes interviewing you. If he does, you may not get the training you need to get started correctly. What Do Your Competitors Do Better Than You? If the answer is, nothing, then the walls are still up youve not made your way into the managers head or heart. Even if the job is a top company, there has to be something admirable he sees in a competitor. You want to know where the manager wants to take his team. Because whatever he thinks a competitor does better is where hell put his focus. They break stories faster than we do, gives you an opening to tout how youve hustled to get an exclusive. They have more Facebook fans, presents a way to emphasize your social media skills. What Happened to the Previous part to Hold the Job? Now your attention shifts from getting to know your possible new boss to finding out m ore about the job. Learn what was expected of the person who held the job and whether the outcome ended happily. It just didnt work out, could set a low bar that you can easily leap across. Maybe it shows that unreasonable expectations were made. In either case, you need to find out more, though personnel policies may prevent the manager from telling you everything. She won a Pulitzer Prize and now works for a national newspaper, presents the opposite issue. You will likely feel there are huge shoes to fill, but at least you know the company produces great work. How Much Does the Media Job Pay? Thats probably what you most want to ask. There are risks in asking this question too early or too directly. You dont want to appear as though money is all you care about. You also shouldnt show that you assume youre getting the job just by being in the office. Wait for the manager to bring up the subject. If hes talking about employee benefits, cost of living or whether theres an employm ent contract to sign, then its natural to ask. Prepare yourself in case the manager throws the question back at you, How much do you think it pays, or What would it take to get you to accept the job, are attempts at getting you to say a number. In a friendly way, avoid answering this question. Thats because if you say, $75,000 and the manager was prepared to offer you $100,000, youve likely cost yourself a lot of money. Youre hired might be the managers response, as he mentally congratulates himself for saving $25,000. Its better to say you dont know the cost of apartments in his city or the condition of the local advertising market, so it would be impossible for you to guess. You want the manager to give the dollar figure. Whats Next in Your Search? As youre leaving the interview, you deserve to know where the manager goes from here. He needs to tell you how and when hell make a decision. Dont be disappointed if you didnt get hired on the spot. Some managers have to check with their own bosses before inviting you to join the company. Ask if you can email or call to check with him in a couple of days or weeks. Make sure to send a follow-up thank you note for the interview promptly. Most interviews will leave you with excitement, yet some concerns. Weigh all of the managers answers instead of just the ones that turned you off thats what hes doing as he considers you. That way, youll make the right decision when considering whether hes the one to lead you as you move up in your media career.

mentorcliq head of talent and diversity on preventing burnoutmentorcliq head of talent and diversity on preventing burnoutLadders recently spoke with Jenn Labin, Head of Talent and Diversity at software solutions company MentorcliQ, and touched on a variety of subjects including strategies to help organizations prevent burnout, how data science has changed the field of HR, and the challenges those in recruiting and talent acquisition face nowadays. What initially attracted you to the field of HR/talent acquisition/recruiting?Like so many HR professionals, I stumbled upon the field by being good enough at my job that someone asked me to teach others how to succeed in the role. Once I started facilitating, I was hooked. I went back to school to get my masters degree in Instructional Design and have spent the rest of my career here. Im so grateful about my career trajectory because Im honored to be a part of transformational moments for employees. My favorite moments are when someone amb ushes me in the hallway at a conference to say theyve used a tool from my book, or they included one of my slides from a talk and it was valuable for them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraHow important of a role does technology, like data science, for example, play in the field of HR and specifically in your work? There are so many ways to answer this question, but lets focus on the role technology plays when it comes to recruiting and retaining employees. Most organizations are constantly trying improve recruitment and retention, (or if not improve, at least maintain.) . As we hire mora millennials and digital natives into our companies, we know they are expecting a high-quality digital experience that enables mora fluid and flexible work and learning. In addition, talented employees are more likely to stay when an organization is investing in their ongoing growth and developmen t. As a software platform that enables mentoring relationships we get amazing stories from our customers. Recently, weve collaborated with customers to look at how our technology impacts retention and its a staggeringly positive result. What technology/innovation/platform has had the most profound effect on the field of HR/recruiting in the past year or two, and why?Im so grateful for the conversation in the talent development space has been focused on the whole digital experience over the last couple of years. This is in contrast with the previous several years when everyone wanted to talk about specific innovations that were shiny and enticing, but nothing is one-size-fits-all. ur customers are looking across their employee development landscape and asking how does MentorcliQ fit in with our LMS, our HRIS, our work collaboration tools? How do we make the digital experience natural, seamless, and robust enough. Dont get me wrong, I cant wait to see where AR goes over the next few y ears, but in the meantime, I love seeing how practitioners are focused on choosing the *right technology* instead of the latest tech. What are the biggest challenges, from a technical and/or business standpoint, that those in recruiting and talent acquisition face nowadays?I think the biggest challenge is defeating the expectation that HR and Talent Development practitioners have to be experts in everything. Build your community so that you know someone to go to if you need to find a remote video interviewing solution or someone who is an expert in the latest eLearning practices. If we try to master every aspect of our territory we will fail to be experts in any specific aspect. Find your network of experts, and then find the few areas of your work you want to become an expert in and help those around you.In terms of employee burnout, what are the signs that employers should be aware of?A feeling that they no longer control their fate at work is one of the most cited reasons for empl oyee burnout. Employers will notice telltale signs of this when an employee demonstrates lack of engagement with their assignments, other members of their team and even their responsibility to show up on time. Lack of communication or negative, cynical communication are other clear signs the employee is no longer happy in their position. Weve found programs, like employee mentoring program, go a long way towards keeping not only new employees engaged in the company, but also more senior members who too may have lost some passion for the job. What steps should employers take to prevent burnout? What are the best practices?Help employees create meaningful connections and establish mutually beneficial learning relationships (aka Mentoring relationships) across divisions, geographic lines, and backgrounds. Burnout happens because the amount and/or type of work being done is contrary to employees. However, a strong internal network helps employees overcome temporary increase in workloads, identify solutions for working more effectively, and increases visibility into other parts of the organization that may be a better fit for employees. What are the key steps that recruiters should take to develop and strengthen relationships with job candidates? We hear it time and time again from millennials. They want a company culture that supports coaching and professional development. One of the key ways a recruiter can strengthen their relationships with job candidates is to start treating them like a business customer. Entice them into your sales funnel by touting the benefits your company provides them, and what separates you from other offers they might be entertaining. The ability to claim your company supports their training and advancement, whether thats through a formal mentoring program or other professional development vehicles you have in place, will go a long way in securing their continued interest in you as a prospect.Where do you see the field of HR/recruiting/tal ent acquisition headed? Crystal ball view?In terms of talent development, I see a higher comfort level in building growth experiences based on relationships as well as solutions that are more seamlessly integrated into each employees daily work. Organizations have been migrating away from the big spending workshop-type learning events for a while, but I think were on the verge of an important shift. Within a couple of years, talent development strategies will be built upon true integration. What has been the most satisfying moment of your career/proudest career achievement, and why?One of the recent moments that stands out was when I facilitated a QA event with about 30 talent development professionals. One woman confessed she needed to build a mentorship program and she had no idea where to start. Two other attendees jumped in and suggested my book They both shared how they had used it as their guidebook for building their respective programs. I was very grateful to get to hear the impact of that work

How to Sign a Cover Letter with Signature Examples

How to Sign a Cover Letter with Signature Examples How to Sign a Cover Letter with Signature Examples When writing a cover letter to include with your resume, its important to pay attention to every detail, since you only get one chance to make that first impression. So, what exactly should you include in your signature when youre writing your cover letter to apply for a job? It varies, depending on how you apply for the position. The format and information included in your signature changes depending on whether you are mailing, uploading or  emailing your cover letter document.   Signing an  Uploaded or Mailed Cover Letter If youre uploading your cover letter to a job site, your signature will simply include a closing and your full name. Place a comma after your close, such as  Best, or Sincerely yours,  and then put your name on the line below.   When youre sending a written letter include a closing, your handwritten signature, and your typed full name. Leave several spaces between the close and your typed name. That way, youll have room for your signature when you print out the letter. Sign using either blue or black ink.   For uploaded or mailed cover letters, you do not need to include as much information as you would in an email message, because the heading of your cover letter includes your contact information. For a paper cover letter, use a formal business-style letter format which includes a heading, salutation, the body of the letter, closing, and your signature. Review these  guidelines for what to include in your letter. Signature Block Examples The following examples show how to format your closing and signature, depending on the type of cover letter you are writing: Example (mailed letter): Closing,  (see sample closings)Handwritten Signature  First Name Last Name Expand Example (signed letter): Best regards,Janet Dolan (Your Signature)Janet Dolan Expand Example (uploaded or emailed letter): Best regards,Janet Dolan Expand Signatures if Youre Emailing   If you are sending your cover letter or inquiry letter by email, end with a polite sign-off followed by your full name.  You do not need to sign a cover letter that is being sent electronically. Write out your full name in the same font as the rest of the letter, and theres no need for italics or a handwriting font.   The formatting here is very similar to an uploaded cover letter. However, emails do not contain a header with your phone number or other contact information.   Its a good idea to include these details in your closing paragraph or after your typed signature. That makes it easy for the employer or networking contact to get in touch with you. You can also include links to online portfolios, if appropriate, or a link to your professional social media account such as LinkedIn or Twitter. You dont want to make this section too cluttered, however, so restrict yourself to the most relevant information. Heres how to set up an email signature, along with more advice on what to include in it and what to leave off.   Signature Examples for Emailed Documents When you are  sending email cover letters, its important to include contact information so the hiring manager can easily see how to contact you. At the very least, include your name, email address, and phone number. You can also add other, optional information, such as your street address, online portfolio, or social media accounts. Sample Email Signature Regards,Your NameEmailPhone Expand Sample Email Signature With Full Address Best,Your NameStreetCity, State  Zip CodeEmailPhone Expand Sample Email Signature With Social Media Handles Sincerely,Your NameEmailPhoneLinkedIn Profile  (Optional)???  Twitter Account  (Optional) Expand Quick Tip:  Dont use your work email address for job searching. Use your personal email account, or set up a unique account to use just for your job hunt. Many free online email services exist, like Gmail and Yahoo mail, that you can use to set up a new email account exclusively for your job search. Even though you are using a personal account, choose an email address that looks professional. Your best bet is some variation on first initial, last name (e.g., jdoegmail.com) or first name, last name (janedoegmail.com). Heres how to set up an  email account just for your job search. How to Work With Someone You Dont Trust - The Muse

How to Work With Someone You Dont Trust - The Muse How to Work With Someone You Dont Trust Once, long ago, I worked at a rapidly growing tech company. For all intents and purposes, the organization was nailing it, sending consultants out all over the country to work with organizations on problem-solving tech-related issues. All sounds great, right? It only took a few months for me to begin noticing things I was far from comfortable with. Client projects would be scoped to leave out key pieces of the solution, so that when the company delivered work the client would then need to re-engage us to deliver the chunks that were missing originally. It seemed to be an unspoken sales tactic, but whatever it was, it smacked wholly of dishonesty and a distinct lack of respect for the client and the employees. In your company, maybe you’ve seen some similar shady underminings. Maybe you’ve seen someone “fix up” a report so that it reads better for the C-suite or for investors. Maybe you’ve overheard a manager using personal attacks to get people in line. Or maybe you’ve seen a married colleague in an affair with another co-worker. Which brings us to the idea of integrity. Researcher and author Brené Brown defines it like this: “Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.” Hits the nail on the head, doesn’t it? I know you know integrity when you see it. But what do you do if you find yourself working with someone who lacks it? Here are three ways to deal: 1. Own Your Story When you see someone do something that, in your eyes, lacks integrity, it’s easy to leap straight to judgment. The leaders of that company I described above? I told myself they were awful people of the worst order, and that they had zero right to be running a company. Watch people manipulate facts or just make something up as part of their work? You might tell yourself that they’re fundamentally dishonest and be convinced that it’s inevitably all going to unravel. If you discover two co-workers carrying on an extramarital affair, you might be disgusted and wonder how they can live with themselves. Your brain weaves a narrative that puts you in the right and others squarely in the wrong, and that’s the story you tell yourself. They’re wrong. They’re bad. You’d never do something like that, so you’re right and good. You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: No one’s perfect. And your story may not even be the whole story. It rarely is. Instead of letting your assumptions drive the narrative, take what you know to be true and see if you can take a step back to assess untapped feelings of your own. When you notice yourself leaping to conclusions, getting fired up, or labeling people as wrong (and yourself as right), think about these three questions: What story are you creating? Take a hard look at what emotions are getting stirred up and the story you’re wrapping around them, even if- especially if- it makes you uncomfortable. What if you let go of that story and the drama? What might happen if you took a more generous point of view? Shedding light on these questions can help take your focus out of the drama and avoid the blame game. Sometimes, in doing that, you can learn something insightful about yourself. 2. Plant Your Feet When someone you work with displays a clear lack of integrity, some common options include: Sucking it way down deep and pretending like you never saw anything. Instigating a fight. How dare they? Dropping a trail of insipid little breadcrumbs that you hope will blow the lid off it all. It’s hard to know what to do in the face of someone whose character you find questionable, but a more fitting response to a lack of integrity is to honor the boundaries of your own integrity. This comes down to what you’re willing and able to compromise on, and what you’re not. If being complicit in something untoward makes your skin crawl, then understand that planting your feet and saying that you can’t be part of it is the right thing for you. If the thought of watching a continuing unethical practice goes totally against what you believe, then know that privately voicing your discomfort to a manager will be the right thing to do. Or if doing nothing while seeing a close colleague fall deeper into an illicit relationship flies in the face of what friendship and support mean to you, then offering a friendly ear may be entirely appropriate. On the other hand, if you aren’t close enough to offer support, then perhaps your boundary of friendship will tell you not to meddle or make things more complicated. When you recognize the values that are in your bones. those things that matter most to you, you’ll know in your gut what you need to do. What are the things that matter to you most, the things that would turn you into someone you didn’t like or respect? There’s no purpose in being pious or self-righteous about this stuff, but when a lack of integrity is impacting your day to day, at the very least, you owe it yourself to respond based on your own boundaries and strength of character. 3. Professionalism Doesn’t Preclude Honesty When faced with a situation that’s less than squeaky clean, professionalism might suggest that you keep your head down and stay focused on the job. Don’t rock the boat. Steer clear. Stay out of it. That makes some sense. The workplace isn’t a social club or a family unit, it’s a place of work, a place where results trump personal preferences. But these days, we all know that an organization works best when the people inside it work together with shared values and vision. When the people in a workplace choose comfort over courage, when they choose what’s fast or easy over what’s right and when they profess values instead of actually practicing them, the organization is doomed. The notion of professionalism as “keeping your head down” or “towing the party line” is dead. In today’s world, professionalism demands that you act honestly and courageously when you see something that lacks integrity. You’re absolutely right to talk to a manager or raise it with the individual involved if you see something dishonest in an organization that professes to value honesty. Be sure to suggest a different, better approach in your team meetings if you observe something unethical that’s becoming the norm. Or lay out how someone’s toxic behavior may be impacting others if you see someone operating with a lack of respect; even let the person know that a different standard of behavior is necessary for everyone to do great work. This doesn’t mean being a tattletale; it means demonstrating courage and asking for a better way. It doesn’t mean resorting to condescension; it means striving for openness and discussion. It doesn’t mean adopting the attitude of a judge, but it does mean expecting a baseline of behavior that’s founded on respect. Speaking up requires courage, of course. It demands you make yourself vulnerable. That’s something that will always feel uncomfortable, but if it also feels right, then you’re on the correct path. Fact is, the workplace will always feature people with a lack of integrity, because there will always be people who are struggling to find their way- and that’s really what a lack of integrity is. Perhaps the only way to work with people like this is to work with them from integrity. It always starts with you. But ultimately, if you still feel compromised or if your performance suffers after you’ve found the courage to honor your own values and integrity, then it may well be time to use that integrity of yours once more, and start looking for a new job. Turning CO2 into a Good Guy

Turning CO2 into a Good Guy Turning CO2 into a Good Guy Turning CO2 into a Good Guy Many consumer plastic products are made frompolyethylene terephthalate (PET). About 50 million tons of PET are produced globally every year. Manufacturing PET and other plastics produces significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. For example, using fossil-fuel feedstocks generates more than four tons of CO2 for every ton of PET that is manufactured. To improve this situation, scientists are turning this harmful gas into a manufacturing asset by using it as a feedstock for plastics, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this way, CO2becomes a renewable raw material that is always abundant and readily available. Promising Research PET is a product of terephthalic acid andethylene glycol. Stanford University researchers have discovered a way to make plastic from carbon dioxide and inedible plant material, such as biomass, by using polyethylene furandicarboxylate (PEF) instead. PEF is made from ethylene glycol and 2-5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which can be sourced from biomass instead of petroleum. The biggest problem with FDCA is finding a low-cost way to produce it. By combining carbonate with CO2 and furoic acid, the team formed a molten salt that converts easily to FDCA. The next steptransforming FDCA into PEF plasticis a straightforward process that has been worked out by other researchers, says lead researcher Matthew Kanan, assistant professor of chemistry at Stanford. Scientists at the University of Bath have successfully made a safer type of polycarbonate (PC) from sugar and carbon dioxide. Current manufacturing methods for PC often use toxic substances such as BPA and phosgene. Their new type of polycarbonate easily biodegrades back into carbon dioxide and sugar, using enzymes from soil bacteria. The production process can be done at low pressure and room temperature, making it a cheaper and safer process. The new plastic is also biocompatible and therefore may have medical applications. The newly opened plant in Dormagen, Germany, is producing a foam component with CO2, instead of oil-based raw material. Image: Covestro Germany-basedCovestro recently announced it has developed a process for producing high-quality plastics using CO2. The company is using the technology to make a novel polyol for the production of flexible, CO2-bearing polyurethane foams designed for mattresses and upholstered furniture. With CO2 as a carbon source, we can increasingly dispense with traditional, fossil sources such as petroleum, says Christoph Gürtler, head of catalysis research at Covestro. After successfully incorporating it in a key precursor to flexible foam, we are now tackling new challenges. Another company working with CO2-containing foam is Novomer, a Massachusetts-based technology company with a set of proprietary catalysts that enable carbon dioxide to be used as a raw material in the production of plastics. Ford Motor Company has partnered with Novomer to developing foams and plastics using captured carbon dioxide. The company is intent on using captured CO2 as a feedstock for the production of vehicle seats and under-the-hood components. By using foams and plastics with up to 50 percent CO2-based polyols, Ford intends to reduce its petroleum consumption by more than 600 million pounds per year. Were sequestering CO2 to make things we need to use, just like living plants do, says Bill Ford, executive chairman for Ford. Except instead of producing complex sugars the way plants do, Ford is taking excess carbon dioxide and making durable plastics to use in vehicles. Future Possibilities There are plenty of benefits from using CO2 in plastics. It is a highly sustainable way to use an abundant, harmful waste product for the production of more environmentally friendly products. These technologies provide low-carbon alternatives to plastic bottles and other items currently made from petroleum. Because CO2-bearing plastics require fewer petroleum inputs, they are easier to recycle. Widespread adoption of CO2-bearing plastics would significantly cut both greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum consumption in the manufacture of plastics. The Stanford team is especially excited about the potential to reduce greenhouse emissions, because the CO2 required to make the PEF can be obtained from fossil-fuel power plant emissions or other industrial sites. Products made of PEF can also be recycled or converted back to atmospheric CO2 by incineration. Eventually, that CO2 will be taken up by grass, weeds and other renewable plants, which can then be used to make more PEF. Our goal is to replace petroleum-derived products with plastic made from CO2, says Kanan. If you could do that without using a lot of non-renewable energy, you could dramatically lower thecarbon footprintof the plastics industry. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writing

Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writing Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writing Resume Builders vs. Traditional Resume writing Recruiters̢۪ attitudes vary extensively, depending on the industry. A candidate applying for a job requiring creativity, such as an interior design firm may have it easy landing an interview using an online generated resume, as they come in various attractive templates from which to choose. Other recruiters, however, are more comfortable going through a resume that has been written from scratch. A basic background research will help a potential candidate to land the dream job they are seeking. the courtesy of A.Meyer unsplash.com Resume Builders through the Eyes of Recruiters: Survey Findings Susan Adams, an editor at Forbes, notes that recruiters will spend about 6.25 seconds going through a candidate̢۪s resume. This is according to research done by TheLadders.com, which also ranked professionally rewritten resumes at 60% score, which is higher than amateur resumes at 40%. The study notes that recruiters prefer the former, due to their better organization and readability compared to those written from scratch. The Ladders examined 30 recruiters over a period of 10 weeks using eye-tracking software to note how they reviewed resumes. Ladders charge a total of $395 for a professionally written resume, clearly indicating that this fee may not be favorable to many. Recruiter Table Battle: Generated Resume vs. Written From Scratch Despite the statistics above, Susan Adams argues in favor of traditionally written resumes. While interviewing Jim Borland, a New York career coach, they both agree that it is best to write the resume yourself, as the interviewing panel may reveal that the professionally written resume is clearly not yours. Adams concludes that it might be helpful to consult a career coach or research and utilize a good online sample to do your resume, rather than have it written by online resume builders. Form vs. Substance: What Online Resume Builders Can and Can̢۪t Online automatic resume builders are great tools to use to get a quick job done. However, using them requires that you proofread for any errors. The candidate should be sure to get right the names of previous employment companies or any other relevant information. Furthermore, some resume builders usually ask for specific information to fill in the different sections. In this case, a problem may arise where one tries to upload a previously done resume, which may prompt you to try a few more times before it is accepted. Resume builders usually present the complete resume in a different format from that offered by applications such as Microsoft Windows word. Adoption problems can come in where one intends to download and edit it on his/her PC. Perhaps the worst downside to it is that you will not necessarily learn how to write a CV after using an online resume builder, despite the fact that you have to input the necessary information you would like included on the resume. In spite of all the disadvantages, online built resumes continue to trend within the business world, with more recruiters adapting to the changes. Online builders can make your resume stand out from the rest, using graphics and attractive fonts. Also included, are candidates̢۪ strengths, and experiences where recruiters are keen to look. With easy access and necessary process to complete the resume, online resume builders are likely to gain recognition and popularity over traditional resumes. Limitations of Online Resume As online resume builders gain more popularity in job searching, they have also faced various shortcomings which have either lowered their credibility or their reliability. First and foremost, online resume builders may face the challenge of limited fonts and formats. A potential candidate might be forced to choose from the available designs which may fall short of a company̢۪s expectations. Moreover, these formats may be different from those offered in applications such as Windows Microsoft Word, which may make further resume editing an uphill task Secondly, online resume writing is limited to those with access to technology. Since technology is readily available in many affordable forms such as smartphones and tablets, adoption of the online resume trend will remain limited to those who can access supporting technology. Finally, online resume writing systems may bring with them logistical complications. The availability of technology means that the best-suited candidates may have their CVs done online while living halfway around the world, saying that jobs applied over a great distance have minimal opportunity for a more personal interview. Pros and Cons Online generated resumes are mostly stylized, made custom depending on the industry where one is applying for a job. These resumes are therefore attractive at first glance and appealing to the interviewing committee. If there is one thing that online resume builders are good at; they do their research extensively. Most of the reputable sites are well versed with the trends in resume writing and are thus aware of what the companies prefer. These sites are keen to highlight the candidate̢۪s key strengths using beautiful subtle graphics. Showing up at a job interview with an online generated resume will more than likely boost a candidate̢۪s esteem, as it easily stands out from traditionally written resumes. On the contrary, Online resumes also fall short of a few credits. These resumes are specific to certain industries, meaning that not all the employers favor them. It may be a disappointment to be turned down even before the interview day, so a background research may be helpful to reveal if a company is receptive to CV writing or not. A potential candidate may come across as less professional if the enterprise prefers traditional resumes to online generated ones. The candidate may as well miss out on certain opportunities, as the design of an online resume is likely to expose employment gaps. Finally, not all sites give a free service. The added cost of a professionally written C.V may restrict them to those who can afford them. In conclusion, there̢۪s a blurred line that separates the resumes produced by online builders and those written from scratch. It̢۪s not easy to say with certainty which one is preferred over the other, as some employees would rather go the traditional way. The method used depends on the company̢۪s preference where a candidate is seeking a job.

Things I wish Id known about money in my 20s

Things I wish I'd known about money in my 20s Things I wish I'd known about money in my 20s The saying goes, “If you knew better, you would do better.” That applies to your personal finance decisions, too, right?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!MoneyGeek asked around the office â€" and on social media â€" for lessons people wish someone would’ve taught them about money in their 20s. Here’s what they came up with:“Pay off your  credit cards; don’t run a balance. Plus, the power of saving versus investing when you don’t have much money. If I invest $50 today and it doubles over 12 months that’s a great return, but I only have $100 total. However, if I save $10/month at the end of the year I have $120. Pretty simple stuff really.” - Doug M.“It’s so important to start some kind of  retirement account  because of return rates on the money invested. Let’s say we put away some money starting early (in our 20s), by the time folks are in their 30s or later, the rate of return would be compounding, and we will see the money way faster than if we start in our 30s. When in our 20s, we think retirement is so far away but we forget and/or ignore the compounding factor.” - Sai“I wish I had taken 401(k)s more seriously when I was in my 20s. I also wish I had a better understanding of different investment options (IRAs, mutual funds, money funds, etc.). In fact, I still wish I had a stronger understanding of those things. Basically, anything about saving. I definitely didn’t think much about long-term savings in my 20s and now wish I had made more of an effort to do that.” - Heidi1) What refinancing means more generally â€" not just for a mortgage but also things like student loans. This is the idea that a loan is something you can restructure and negotiate, but there are reasons why a lender would do that or not (basically market conditions).2) When should you buy  insurance  or when should you not â€" the economic concept that you should only get insurance if the potential loss is so great that you would face significant financial harm. (This is the rationale for generally declining things like product warranties â€" usually absorbing the cost of a new phone is not going to bankrupt you, or you can live with the cost of paying to have it fixed.) Or if it’s illegal not to have it, like for car insurance (but even then, there are different types, not all of which are required).” - Lydia“The age of your credit history is an important factor on your  credit score! The older your credit history, the better. One of the easiest ways to start your credit history is to open a credit card account.” - Karim“Invest, invest, invest!” - NathanHere are a few questions I had: â€" How can you  start saving  when you get your first REAL job and aren’t living paycheck to paycheck anymore? â€"  Rent vs. buy  Ã¢€" Which makes more sense? Tips for Having a Good Relationship With Your Boss- The Muse

Tips for Having a Good Relationship With Your Boss- The Muse Tips for Having a Good Relationship With Your Boss Worried what your boss thinks of you- if they like you, trust you, and think your contributions match up to their expectations? If so, you’re not alone. Considering you’ll end up spending 10 years of your life at work, getting along with your boss is not only critical to succeeding in your career, but matters for your overall happiness and engagement at the office. With that in mind, here are three easy ways to develop an effective, productive, and mutually rewarding relationship with your manager (even if they’re a tough cookie to crack): 1. Stop Using Email to Have Important Conversations Is email your go-to forum for everything? In certain cases, it could be hurting your relationship. Even if it’s your manager’s favorite medium, it’s time to break the pattern of always relying on this. Opt for in-person meetings if the conversation’s beyond a task or agenda-setting item- for example, if you’re asking for something or apologizing for a mistake. Not only is it just polite, it’ll most likely lead to a more productive discussion and help ensure you and your boss are truly on the same page. “All of us are the worst possible version of ourselves in digital media,” adds Celeste Headlee, journalist and author of We Need to Talk: How to Have Conversations That Matter. “We might think we are persuasive in email, but scientifically, we are so much more persuasive in person.” 2. See Your Relationship With Your Boss as a Two-Way Street Too often, we see ourselves as the executors and our managers as the creators of work, forgetting that our manager is also responsible for their own assignments. So, if you want to immediately improve your relationship, ask them this simple question: “What can I do for you?” By opening up this conversation, you open the door for them to delegate projects they may not have otherwise considered. And, taking on stretch assignments can improve your visibility and lead to career advancement. Wondering what else you should be talking about with your manager? Read this: 8 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Boss. 3. Be a Good Recipient of Feedback (and Ask Pointed Questions) Get in the mindset that you want actual, honest feedback- and be physically ready for it. Even if the feedback seems insensitive, kindly explain how the approach hurt your feelings, but then ask questions to get at the root of the problem, making it clear you really do want to improve. If you’re a good feedback recipient, your boss will be more likely to share valuable advice with you, which will ultimately help you grow. And, if you’re finding that you only getting positive feedback, ask your manager to be more specific, or try mentioning something you wish you’d handled differently. “If you open a dialogue with self-reflection, you give your boss- who might be uncomfortable giving you criticism- the opportunity to go on the learning journey with you,” advises Denise Cox, VP of Technical Services at Cisco Systems. Finally, don’t wait for periodic reviews to get constructive feedback. If you can, ask your manager to schedule time to meet one-on-one weekly or monthly. Research by Gallup shows that 50% of employees leave their job “to get away from their manager to improve their overall life at some point in their career,” which means building the right kind of relationship with your boss can make a real difference to your job satisfaction and career progression. Plus, it’ll make your friends and family find you much more enjoyable to be around outside of work.
